Dermatology relies heavily on a specialized descriptive vocabulary to allow clinicians to communicate effectively. As with many areas of medical description, it follows a general formula:

Patient identification, age, year old, sex, with significant associated medical conditions, , and plus anatomical distribution (sidedness) , (number)
